Midsommar Things
The only constant is change.
Here are some things that kept me going the last few months.
Two essays against the allure of “getting work done”:
A Taco Bell Crunchwrap Supreme (with beans instead of meat!) consumed in a Phoenix strip mall parking lot.
A rewatch of the film Nebraska before Tyler’s work trip to Omaha last month.
A rewatch of the film Muriel’s Wedding.
The rosemary and apple cider vinegar shrub at Edendale.
Perfect Little Woman by Philippa Snow and Aesthetical Relations by Christina Catherine Martinez.
MT by Lucy Ellmann in The Paris Review.
Lena Dunham’s “40 Things I Want To Do After 40.”
Love Story. Flavortown Food Fight. Widow’s Bay. In that order. The latter is worth getting AppleTV for! All three have kept me sane during our stressful move.
Bob’s Red Mill Creamy Wheat. Good all year round, imo.
Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind at The Broad in DTLA.
This LA Material deep dive into the illegal underground fireworks trade in California. If you’ve spent any time in Los Angeles, you are familiar with the near constant explosions in the sky.
Writing at the mall. In the food court. In front of a poké place. Im not sure why this worked for me but it did. I’m trying to disorient myself more.
Speaking of writing, here are some things I’ve published recently.
A few years ago I volunteered at an all girls public high school once a week during lunch as a writing facilitator for POPS Club and Pathfinder Network, two organizations working hard to provide creative support to families of the incarcerated. My car still faintly smells of Subway tuna sandwiches, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I wrote the forward to their new anthology, a collection of powerful young voices.
Here’s my latest interview for The Creative Independent with debut author Avigayl Sharp.
My interview with Cinespia founder, John Wyatt for Los Angeles Times Image.
My conversation with the founders of the renowned Bay Area printmaking studio Paulson Fontaine Press is included in Issue 6 of The Panafold, a gorgeous print-only California arts and architecture magazine.
I’m currently teaching a six-week course at Gotham Writers: Nonfiction 101.
My heart is full.
